What COVID-19 vaccines are approved by the FDA?

There are currently two COVID-19 vaccines that have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

  • Pfizer-BioNTech is a two-dose vaccine that is given 21 days apart. The first dose is 80% effective at preventing COVID-19, and the second dose is 95% effective.
  • Moderna is a two-dose vaccine that is given 28 days apart. The first dose is 94.1% effective at preventing COVID-19, and the second dose is 97.6% effective.

Both vaccines are highly effective at preventing severe illness and death from COVID-19.

It’s important to note that these vaccines are not 100% effective, so it’s still possible to get sick with COVID-19 after getting vaccinated. However, the risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19 is much lower for people who have been vaccinated.

If you have any questions about the safety or efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines, please talk to your healthcare provider.

Who qualifies for a COVID-19 booster shot?

The booster shots are recommended for people over the age of 65 and those with certain medical conditions that put them at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.

People who have received a single dose of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna can get a booster shot after 3 months.

Pfizer-BioNTech is also now offering a third dose of their vaccine to people who have received two doses and are still at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19. This third dose should be given 6 months after the second dose.

Please talk to your healthcare provider if you have any questions about whether or not you should get a booster shot.

What are the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine?

The most common side effects of the COVID-19 vaccines are mild and include pain at the injection site, fever, chills, and fatigue. These side effects are normal and are a sign that your body is building immunity to the virus.

Serious side effects from the vaccine are very rare, but they can include an allergic reaction (such as hives, swelling of the face or tongue, or difficulty breathing). If you have any of these symptoms after getting vaccinated, please seek medical attention immediately.

It’s also important to note that you may not have any side effects at all after getting vaccinated.

If you have any questions or concerns about the side effects of the COVID vaccine, speak with your doctor.

Who qualifies for a 4th COVID-19 booster shot?

The 4th booster shot is currently only recommended for people who have received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and are still at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19. This 4th dose should be given 6 months after the third dose.

Please talk to your healthcare provider if you have any questions about whether or not you should get a 4th booster shot.

What are the side effects of the 4th COVID-19 booster shot?

The most common side effects of the 4th COVID-19 booster shot are mild and include pain at the injection site, fever, chills, and fatigue. These side effects are normal and are a sign that your body is building immunity to the virus.

Can I receive the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu shot at the same time?

Yes, you can receive the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu shot at the same time. In fact, it’s recommended that you do so to help protect yourself from both viruses.

There is no evidence that receiving both vaccines at the same time will increase your risk of side effects. However, you may experience more side effects from the vaccines if you receive them close together.

If you have any questions or concerns about receiving both vaccines, please speak with your healthcare provider.

Do minors need a legal guardian's consent if they wish to get a COVID-19 vaccination?

Yes, minors will need a legal guardian’s consent if they wish to get a COVID-19 vaccination. The process for obtaining consent may vary from state to state, so it’s important to check with your local health department or vaccination site for more information.

In some cases, the legal guardian may be able to give consent remotely (e.g., via email or over the phone). Again, it’s important to check with your local health department or vaccination site for more information.

Is there a cost associated with the COVID-19 vaccine?

No, there is no cost associated with the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccines are free to all eligible people in the United States.

If you have health insurance, your insurance company may be billed for the cost of administering the vaccine. However, you will not be responsible for any costs related to the vaccine itself.

If you do not have health insurance, you will still be able to receive the vaccine at no charge to you.

Can I get the COVID-19 vaccine if I am pregnant?

Yes, you can get the COVID-19 vaccine if you are pregnant. The vaccine is safe for both you and your baby.

Pregnant women are at an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, so you must get vaccinated as soon as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns about getting the vaccine while pregnant, please speak with your healthcare provider. More information related to COVID-19 and pregnant women can be found at the CDC.

Can I get the COVID-19 vaccine if I am breastfeeding?

Yes, you can get the COVID-19 vaccine if you are breastfeeding. The vaccine is safe for both you and your baby.
